Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader rewards system places more emphasis on quality than quantity!

Each student has a certification level goal.  The certification level assigned to each student is based upon their STAR report, which is an evaluative test given at the beginning of the year, combined with the effort they displayed during the first grading period of each year.  Each child is assigned a goal that they can achieve by the end of the first semester.

This method puts far more emphasis on accuracy and book length than on the points earned.  The statistics compiled by the parent company of the Accelerated Reader Program show clearly that this new emphasis produces greater growth in reading ability, as well as a love of reading in students at all levels.

All students who achieve their goal by the end of the first semester will be invited to an afternoon video with snacks in the library.  They also will have their picture hung on a banner for their certification level in the hallway outside the library.  In addition, achievements will be recognized during the morning school wide announcements.  Students are motivated to achieve when their awards are published.

Students are expected to meet their grading period goals as part of their overall Reading grades: points earned, accuracy percentage and book levels.   At the end of each grading period, each student who accomplishes his three goals will be invited to select an item from the library treasure chest.

It is a particular goal of ARP to encourage and reward those students who have not yet developed a love of reading and/or are still struggling.  Also, those students whose love of reading is well grounded will be pleased with the attention this draws to their efforts and accomplishments.
